Online Phonics Tutor in New York

Personalized Online Tutoring For Your Child

Built on a Proven Phonics-Based Reading Program with a 98% success rate

Reading In PreSchool offers online tutoring for families who need flexibility. Similar to our in-person tutoring, this program offers literacy support and learning products built around The Alexander Reading Method. Families often come to us before a child falls behind. That early start gives children time to build reading skills through a phonics-based approach that supports learners from the earliest stages through second grade and beyond. Our online tutoring is offered throughout New York and across the world.

Our Online Tutoring Curriculum

At Reading In PreSchool, our online tutoring helps your child become a more confident reader and a stronger one. We meet your child where they are and guide them forward with clear, personalized instruction that keeps them engaged and supported. Our primary online curriculum is built around The Alexander Reading Method.

The Alexander Reading Method is a phonics-based curriculum that teaches children letters, sounds, blending, decoding, writing, and other core literacy skills in a way that feels engaging and approachable. Our online lessons are play-based and help children build strong foundations while developing confidence and a genuine love of learning.

Every child starts with an assessment to help us understand their individual needs and ensure proper placement. Our online teachers use The Alexander Reading Method Curriculum as a core framework, while customizing each lesson to suit the specific learner. If your child’s school has particular goals or requirements for them, we're happy to adapt our instruction accordingly.

Does This Support What My Child Will Learn At School?

The Alexander Reading Method was developed to bridge the early learning gap, where children are already falling behind starting in 1st grade. Children are not taught in preschool. In Kindergarten, the focus is on memorizing a set amount of sight words, and by 1st grade, students are expected to learn three grade levels of information. Too much information to retain. Our online program begins with learning phonemic awareness, letter learning, and CVC words at age 4, then blends, digraphs, diphthongs, and sight words are expected by 1st grade at age 5.

What does this mean? This means children enter first grade with a strong foundation, fully capable of absorbing and retaining the three grade levels of information taught, and are prepared for second-grade chapter book reading while still in 1st grade. Once a child achieves a solid 2nd-grade reading level, the more challenging grades that follow become much smoother.  Instead of waiting to see if children fall behind in 1st grade and negatively affect their confidence, we are doing the opposite. We are helping them develop confidence from an early age, which will benefit them for a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be with my child during their session?

Yes, we ask that someone be with your child during the online sessions (either a parent or a nanny, etc).

How many online sessions do we need to book per week?

We require a minimum of two online sessions per week, per student. Online lessons can be scheduled for 30-minutes or longer (for children ages 4 to 5, the online sessions only take 30 minutes, and we recommend scheduling two or three sessions per week).

What reading milestones do children work toward in The Alexander Reading Method Program with your online program?

Children in The Alexander Reading Method Program with Reading In PreSchool work toward grade-based benchmarks that build reading, writing, spelling, and confidence over time. These milestones include:

  • Nursery: Fine motor skills, letter recognition, letter sounds, and letter writing, if the child is ready.
  • PreK Year One: The same goals as Nursery, with added focus on letter writing.
  • PreK Year Two: Letter writing skills, Level 1 readers, blending skills, and the first 60 words, including 40 trick or sight words that cannot be sounded out.
  • Kindergarten: Progress through Levels 2 and 3 before 1st grade, with spelling and sentence writing for children who are ready.
  • 1st Grade: Advance through Levels 4 and 5 while building spelling and writing skills and preparing for chapter books in 2nd grade.
  • 2nd Grade: Strengthen fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary through age-appropriate chapter books, while also working on spelling and paragraph writing to prepare for 3rd grade.

The goal is to help children stay 6 to 12 months ahead so they feel confident and ready for more demanding reading in later grades.

How does your online phonics instruction work within the Alexander Reading Method?

At Reading In PreSchool, our online approach uses structured lessons and instructional tools to introduce reading concepts at an early age (beginning as early as 4), helping children build skills in a way that feels natural and engaging.

Is your online program a good fit for beginning readers?

It can be, yes. However, we always conduct an assessment during the first session to make sure the online program is an appropriate fit for your child's unique skills and current reading level.

Our online method follows a very clear scope and sequence for teaching students that supports reading development and prepares children for first grade and beyond.

Is your online phonics program ideal for very young learners?

Potentially, yes. This will depend on whether an online learning format is ideal for your child's age.

Do you offer digital resources for children learning to read?

Yes, we do. Our activities are always interactive and incorporate digital tools to help children practice their foundational reading skills both during and outside of their online sessions.

How do you teach phonics sounds to children online?

We teach phonics sounds to children online the same way we do in-person: By teaching children how to connect phonics sounds with letters in a clear, consistent way.

Can this program help struggling readers catch up?

Yes. Our approach is supported by foundational research to strengthen letter-sound relationships and help children reach their grade level.
