PreK Reading Program in New York
Give your child a strong start with the Reading In PreSchool PreK reading program, designed to build confidence, curiosity, and real reading skills from an early age. Through personalized, play-based lessons, children begin developing the foundations they need to read, write, and succeed in school.
Our PreK Reading Curriculum includes two progressive levels—Phase One and Phase Two—beginning with preschoolers ages 3 and 4.
PREK READING PROGRAM CURRICULUM
We use The Alexander Reading Method, which introduces children to reading through a structured, phonics-based approach that feels natural and enjoyable. Starting with ages 3 and 4, children in our PreK program learn letters, sounds, blending, decoding, and writing through lessons designed to match their pace and learning style.
Each child begins with an initial assessment. This helps us understand where they are and how they learn best. From there, lessons are shaped around their individual needs, helping them build skills while staying engaged and confident.
In-Person New York Classes
In-person lessons are offered year-round in New York City, Scarsdale, Rye, Rye Brook, and Greenwich, CT. During the summer, families can also take in-person classes in the Hamptons.
Classes take place in your home and are play-based to keep learning enjoyable, while still building a strong academic foundation. With consistent support and one-on-one attention, children develop the skills needed to stay 6 to 12 months ahead, making the transition into more demanding grades feel smooth and manageable.
What Your Child Will Learn
Your child will move through two structured stages during our PreK program—PreK Year One and PreK Year Two—each designed to build skills step by step.
Phase One
Focuses on early foundations, helping children develop:
Fine motor skills to support writing
Letter recognition and letter sounds
Early letter writing skills, when the child is ready
Confidence through play-based learning and repetition
This stage introduces structure in a gentle way, helping children become familiar with letters and begin expressing them through writing.
Phase Two
Builds on that foundation and introduces more advanced early reading skills, including:
Continued development of letter-writing skills
Blending sounds to begin forming words
Reading Level 1 books
Learning to blend 60 CVC words and read their first 40 sight words
At this point, children are preparing for our benchmarks in Kindergarten, where we then prepare children for 1st grade.
Each step meets your child where they are, helping them build real skills while gaining confidence in their ability to learn and read on their own.

Every single child is different. If your child has no processing delays or learning issues, and if there are no significant breaks from sessions throughout the year, the following is our general time frame to plan for. It is based on consistent, twice-per-week classes and some light homework a few times a week.
- Age 2.5: 3 years
- Ages 3 to 4: 2-3 years
- Ages 4.5-5.5: 2 years
- Ages 5.5 - 6.5: 1-2 years
- Older ages: 6 months to a year
In our experience, we have seen that children who take a break from classes for a month or more usually lose 2 months of information for every month they miss. This results in the course extending beyond the time frames listed above.
Yes. We use explicit instruction to guide beginning readers step by step as they move toward fluent reading.
Yes. Our approach is supported by foundational research to strengthen letter-sound relationships and help children reach their grade level.
Many schools in the U.S. delay structured reading instruction and rely on memorization early on, which can leave gaps once expectations increase in first and second grade. Without early phonics and individualized support, children often feel rushed to catch up, which adds pressure instead of building confidence.
Starting earlier, when children are naturally ready to learn, helps them build strong reading skills before those demands begin.
Through the Alexander Reading Method with Reading In PreSchool, children receive structured, phonics-based reading instruction that builds strong literacy skills from an early age. With one-on-one guidance and a personalized pace, children develop the academic skills that support success across subjects as they move into more demanding grades.
Our reading program is designed specifically for early learners, combining play-based lessons with focused instruction. Each child begins with an assessment, and lessons are adjusted to match their pace, helping them build the literacy skills needed while staying engaged and confident.
Children move through PreK Year One and Year Two with a clear progression that builds reading, writing, and blending skills step by step. This can strengthen the literacy skills needed for continued growth and help children become enthusiastic readers who feel comfortable reading on their own.
