Kindergarten Reading Program in New York
Give your child the tools to become a confident, independent reader with the Reading In PreSchool Kindergarten Reading Program. In this program, children begin strengthening their reading fluency, expanding their vocabulary, and building the skills they need to move into first grade with confidence. Through personalized, engaging lessons, children continue developing their reading and writing abilities in a way that feels both achievable and motivating.
Kindergarten Reading Program Curriculum
We use The Alexander Reading Method, a structured, phonics-based approach that helps children build strong reading skills step by step. In Kindergarten, students move beyond early foundations and begin reading with greater fluency, accuracy, and understanding.
Each child begins with an initial assessment. This allows us to understand their current skill level and learning style. From there, lessons are customized to support steady progress, helping each child build confidence while continuing to develop real reading skills.
In-Person New York Classes
In-person lessons are offered year-round in New York City, Scarsdale, Rye, Rye Brook, and Greenwich, CT. During the summer, families can also take in-person classes in the Hamptons.
Classes take place in your home and are play-based to keep learning enjoyable, while still building a strong academic foundation. With consistent support and one-on-one attention, children develop the skills needed to stay 6 to 12 months ahead, making the transition into more demanding grades feel smooth and manageable.
WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN
During our Kindergarten program, children advance through Levels 2 and 3, building on the foundation established in earlier years. When children spend two years in the Kindergarten reading program, it allows for a more gradual pace. They can complete Level 2 in the first year and move into Level 3 during the second year. By the end of the program, children are reading more independently, writing simple sentences, and entering first grade with a strong foundation in both reading and writing.
In Level 2, children strengthen their reading skills by:
Expanding their vocabulary through new word patterns
Improving blending and decoding skills
Reading more complex words and sentences
Developing greater reading fluency and confidence
In Level 3, children continue progressing with:
More advanced reading comprehension
Stronger fluency and expression while reading
Introduction to spelling for children who are ready
Sentence writing to support both reading and written communication
Each step meets your child where they are, helping them build real skills while growing in confidence as a reader and learner.

Every single child is different. If your child has no processing delays or learning issues, and if there are no significant breaks from sessions throughout the year, the following is our general time frame to plan for. It is based on consistent, twice-per-week classes and some light homework a few times a week.
- Age 2.5: 3 years
- Ages 3 to 4: 2-3 years
- Ages 4.5-5.5: 2 years
- Ages 5.5 - 6.5: 1-2 years
- Older ages: 6 months to a year
In our experience, we have seen that children who take a break from classes for a month or more usually lose 2 months of information for every month they miss. This results in the course extending beyond the time frames listed above.
Yes. Our Kindergarten reading program focuses on strengthening reading skills through Levels 2 and 3, helping children move from early decoding into more fluent, confident reading. As children progress, they continue building early literacy skills through structured lessons that reinforce phonemic awareness, expand sight words, and develop accuracy with letter sounds in increasingly complex words and sentences.
Yes. Our approach supports early learners by reinforcing foundational reading skills through targeted instruction in blending, decoding, and word recognition. Children revisit key concepts like phonemic awareness and sight words while continuing to build the literacy skills needed to stay on track with other elementary students as expectations increase.
Many schools introduce reading in a broader way, and not all focus on structured phonics or individualized pacing. This can leave gaps in early literacy, especially when children are expected to recognize sight words without fully understanding letter sounds or phonemic awareness. Our reading program teaches reading step by step, so that children build confidence before moving into more advanced material.
At the Kindergarten level, we focus on accuracy and independence. Children are expected to read more on their own, so we spend time correcting guessing habits, strengthening attention to letter sounds, and helping them recognize when something does not sound right. They also begin managing longer reading tasks and more complete written responses, which builds control over both reading and writing. This shift helps early learners develop literacy skills they can rely on as expectations increase in first grade.
