Kindergarten Reading Program on the Upper East Side

Children on the Upper East Side can strengthen their literacy foundation and grow into more confident readers through the Reading In PreSchool Kindergarten Reading Program. The program helps young learners improve reading fluency, increase vocabulary, and develop the skills needed to enter first grade with confidence. Through personalized lessons and engaging instruction, children continue building reading and writing abilities in a way that feels encouraging, rewarding, and enjoyable.

Kindergarten Reading Program Curriculum

The Alexander Reading Method is a structured phonics based program designed to help children develop reading skills through clear and organized instruction. In Kindergarten, students continue progressing beyond introductory literacy skills while improving fluency, comprehension, and reading confidence through personalized support and guided learning activities.

Each child begins the program with a detailed assessment that allows us to evaluate reading level, learning habits, and areas requiring additional attention. Based on the results, lessons are customized to encourage ongoing progress while helping children feel motivated and confident as they continue building strong reading skills.

In-Person New York Classes

In-person lessons are available year round throughout New York City, Scarsdale, Rye, Rye Brook, and Greenwich. During the summer months, families may also schedule in-person classes in The Hamptons.

Lessons are conducted in the comfort of your home and use a play based approach that keeps learning engaging while continuing to build strong academic skills. Through individualized instruction and consistent support, children develop the confidence and abilities needed to remain 6 to 12 months ahead academically, helping future grade transitions feel more comfortable and manageable.

WHAT YOUR CHILD ON THE UPPER EAST SIDE WILL LEARN

Children on the Upper East Side who are enrolled in our Kindergarten program continue developing literacy skills by progressing through Levels 2 and 3, building on the reading foundation established in earlier years. Spending two years in the Kindergarten reading program allows children to move through lessons at a gradual and supportive pace, usually completing Level 2 during the first year before continuing into Level 3 during the second year. By the end of the program, children are reading more independently, writing complete simple sentences, and transitioning into first grade with greater confidence in both reading and writing.

In Level 2, children strengthen their reading skills by:

  • Strengthening vocabulary through the introduction of new reading patterns and words

  • Practicing blending and decoding strategies to support reading accuracy

  • Progressing toward more complex vocabulary and sentence reading skills

  • Improving fluency while developing stronger confidence as independent readers

In Level 3, children continue progressing with:

  • Developing more advanced reading comprehension skills through guided instruction

  • Strengthening fluency and natural expression during reading activities

  • Introducing spelling concepts for children who are prepared for the next level

  • Practicing sentence writing to support both reading development and written communication skills

Each phase of instruction is personalized to your child’s current abilities, helping them strengthen practical reading skills while becoming more confident and independent learners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Year round in-person lessons are available for families in the Upper East Side through programs offered across New York City, Scarsdale, Rye, Rye Brook, and Greenwich. During the summer months, families may also schedule in person lessons in The Hamptons. Lessons take place directly in your home to provide a comfortable and supportive learning experience.

We require each student to participate in a minimum of two sessions per week to support steady academic progress and consistent skill development. Lessons may be scheduled for 30 minutes or longer depending on the child’s learning needs and family preferences.

Yes. Parents receive regular monthly progress reports that outline their child’s learning progress and continued reading development. Progress reports are not sent during December, March, and June because these months generally include frequent school vacations and holiday breaks.

No two children learn exactly the same way, so reading development timelines may vary based on individual learning needs and consistency. For students without processing delays or learning issues who attend lessons regularly throughout the year with minimal interruptions, the following provides a general estimate for planning purposes. This projection assumes participation in two lessons each week along with occasional light homework practice during the week.

  • Age 2.5: 3 years
  • Ages 3 to 4: 2-3 years
  • Ages 4.5-5.5: 2 years
  • Ages 5.5 - 6.5: 1-2 years
  • Older ages: 6 months to a year

Based on our experience, children who pause classes for a month or longer often lose approximately two months of previously learned information for every month away from instruction. As a result, extended breaks may cause the overall program timeline to continue beyond the estimated timeframes listed above.

Yes. The goal of our Kindergarten reading program is to strengthen reading development through Levels 2 and 3 while helping children transition from early decoding into more fluent reading skills. As children continue progressing, structured lessons reinforce phonemic awareness, broaden sight word recognition, and improve accuracy with letter sounds used in more advanced words and sentence combinations.

Yes. Our approach supports early learners by strengthening foundational reading skills through focused instruction in blending, decoding, and word recognition. Children continue reviewing important concepts such as phonemic awareness and sight word development while building the literacy skills needed to keep pace with increasing elementary school expectations.

Many educational settings introduce reading through broad instructional methods that may not include structured phonics or individualized progression for each student. This can lead to gaps in literacy development, especially when children are expected to identify sight words without fully developing phonemic awareness or letter sound recognition skills. Our reading program follows a structured step by step process that helps children strengthen confidence and foundational reading abilities before advancing into more complex material.

At the Kindergarten level, our focus shifts toward developing reading accuracy and greater independence. Children are encouraged to read more confidently on their own, so instruction emphasizes correcting guessing habits, strengthening attention to letter sounds, and recognizing when words or sentences do not sound correct. Students also begin working through longer reading assignments and more complete written responses, helping them build stronger control over both reading and writing skills. This progression prepares children to manage the increasing academic expectations they will encounter in first grade.
